Why You Should Consider Mobility

Smart Glance

Mobility—it means a lot of things these days. Getting information immediately on a smart device. Having your system travel with you, unbounded by physical walls of the plant. Or, "untethering" your application from its PC-bound form.

SmartGlance connects your mobile phone with any corporate or production system data source. Virtually any electronic data that is delivered to your desktop can be transformed into a graphical report for real time viewing on your mobile smart phone or device. SmartGlance allows you to visualize data from a historian, MES, HMI, or other real-time automation application.

Cloud Deployments Grow with Utilities

Municipal water and wastewater systems like cloud communication to stay connected to widely spread assets.

One industry segment that has embraced the concept of "iPhone as HMI" is municipal water and wastewater utilities. With widely distributed wells, pumping stations, valves, treatment facilities, and many miles of pipelines, the ability to use the cloud to monitor and control equipment is very appealing.

James Jacklett, electrical and signal supervisor for Carson City (Nev.) Public Works, says that the city has deployed a two-sided system on the cloud to support both management and operators as they keep water and wastewater flowing throughout the city and surrounding areas. Operators use Wonderware InTouch to access control systems and individual tags as needed, while managers use SmartGlance to keep tabs on production levels and work orders.

Jacklett explains, "In the past, our management team would have to log in through remote access through the VPN and then log into the Wonderware application, or be on our intranet here to get to the server. With our new system I'm able to deliver key performance indicators and critical process information such as production and demand on the water side, with ease of access wherever they are. They can be on the road or at a meeting, they can open their phone or iPad, get their information in a hurry, and contact someone if they see something they don't like."

Wireless apps, cloud services transform decision making, data management for packaging lines

Dairy products producer balances quality and consistency during facility expansion, incorporating and monitoring new product filling and packaging lines and associated equipment.

Manufacturers are constantly under pressure to increase efficiency, streamline operations, contain costs, and increase productivity, particularly when the competitive landscape is strong and consumer demand for creative new products is constant. They need to accomplish these goals—and expand too. It is a tall order.

Efficiency starts right on the plant floor—and that is where mobile applications let companies transcend distance and connectivity issues, creating a virtual, personalized space for collaboration. In the food processing and packaging business, mobile applications are helping workers make better, faster, smarter analyses and actions, based on real-time visualization of their processes.

One dairy products producer that makes and distributes a wide range of foods and beverages had to maintain a stream of traditional products and introduce new products to suit changing consumer tastes and trends. These requirements demanded a delicate balance between quality and consistency, and an expansion of facilities, and involved incorporating and monitoring new product filling and packaging lines and their associated equipment.

Key to this producer's growth strategy is capital efficiency—getting the most out of its facilities and equipment. To help accomplish this, the company checks its lines for OEE (overall equipment efficiency) and production rates in real time with the help of the Invensys SmartGlance mobile reporting system, which makes information available to users in real time, 24/7.

Mobile Reporting goes Mainstream…

"My Plant Manager bought a new iPad and the Production Manager has an Android based phone. Now, they want to view the latest production and efficiency reports from their home and when they are travelling. How can we do that?" asked the Automation Engineer at a large manufacturing facility. "Viewing reports from the email attachment is not convenient due to the scrolling problems and the size of the report. Also, sending and opening emails every 15 minutes is not practical."

SmartGlance and Invensys can help. Invensys partnered with SmartGlance to offer mobile reporting solution that can deliver real time and historical reports on any mobile devices.

Wireless apps, cloud services transform decision making, data management for packaging lines

Key to the producer's growth strategy is capital efficiency—getting the most out of its facilities and equipment. To help accomplish this, the company checks its lines for OEE (overall equipment efficiency) and production rates in real time with the help of the Invensys SmartGlance mobile reporting system, which makes information available to users in real time, 24/7.

Using mobile devices, management reviews production reports. In some cases, it will discover that one of the plant locations did not meet a target. With the "drill down" capability in the SmartGlance application, a manager can go to the next information level for that plant location and view line performance. There, a manager might discover that a particular line was down. Drilling down still further, he can view all the equipment in that line where he can pinpoint the packaging machine in question and check its OEE. All this can be done in-house or remotely. Other aspects of the SmartGlance application allow data to be compared with ideal batches, providing support for determining corrective actions.

Information from the plant processes is collected via local monitoring and control systems and resides on a secure cloud server. Using a combination of SmartGlance and Microsoft technologies, data is then available on demand to a smart mobile device, which for this producer is the iPhone. When the data travels to and from the cloud server, the service is fully secured, providing authentication, authorization, and encryption.

Harnessing smart solutions

Smart Glance
Invensys Operations Management has launched SmartGlance, a new software as a service (SaaS) partner offering that delivers industrial and manufacturing intelligence data, archived in plant automation systems and data stores, to smartphones. The SmartGlance solution will be offered as part of an endorsed partner agreement the company has signed with Sarla Analytics, an innovative supplier of smartphone applications focused on business intelligence.

"Web-based reporting tools simply can't match the speed, functionality or readability of Sarla's SmartGlance reports," said Rob McGreevy, vice president, platform and applications, Invensys Operations Management. "The great thing about SmartGlance is that it is a native phone app, not a web client, so you can use advanced touchscreen features on your smartphone to quickly access and scroll through the reports. Everyone has a smartphone these days. They are rapidly becoming an important, everyday tool that can be used to achieve productivity excellence. With SmartGlance, managers, engineers and operators can use them to view the most current process and equipment performance data as well."

The new SaaS offering will be hosted at a secure SmartGlance data centre that minimises the need for customers to have local IT support and maintenance. Invensys Operations Management will supply data connectors that enable data stored in its Wonderware Historian and other products to be included in SmartGlance reports and analytics.

The native SmartGlance phone application takes full advantage of the many powerful display features of touchscreen-based smartphones. Interactive tabular reports, along with trends, bar charts and pie charts, can be manipulated easily, allowing extensive data drill down capabilities. Users can even issue or share reports with co-workers via e-mail, enhancing real-time collaboration and effectively adding enterprise control capability to smartphones.
